Hello everyone! This week was a lot better than last week, and very, very busy. Let’s get started, shall we?
Monday was fairly easy. I had a TA meeting which made me a
little stressed because I actually taught this week, so I was feeling the
pressure. However, it wasn’t too bad and I treated myself to a blueberry muffin
for my troubles before sitting alone for my office hours. I used that time to
work on other classes and set myself up for success on Tuesday and Thursday.
When I was able to come home, I watched my Nutrient Gene Interactions lecture.
It was pretty boring, since it was just a review of transcription factors,
which I understand from my Cell Biology class. After that I ended up reading a
paper about oxytocin and natural pain relief in the human body before the Freeman
Lab meeting, since that ‘s what we were discussing. My computer of course,
decided to have issues with my audio, so I had a hard time doing my
introduction to the new lab members, but I was able to use the chat and contribute
that way. After that, Sam came over again. I’ve been feeling a little
sad, since Maren and he are clearly dating (they are officially boyfriend and
girlfriend as of this Friday) which kind of made me feel left out, but it was
okay. I just left the room to go and watch youtube videos to try and make myself
feel better until I went to bed.
Tuesday started out really bad, but ended up rather nice. I
spent the morning trying to draw and getting increasingly more frustrated when
it wasn’t working. This led to my wrist being awful by the time my Animal
Molecular Biology class started, so I ended up typing my notes. I was able to
answer a lot of questions though, so I felt pretty smart, which was really
nice. Then… it was time to TA for the first time this semester. The first class
was alright, but I was a mess, and kind of fumbled over myself. The UA for that
class is pretty nice, but we didn’t really talk much. The second class went a
lot smoother, and I felt much more confident and in charge. It helped that the
UA for that class, Ulrick, was really awesome. He’s a nutrition major who’s
also studying the gut microbiome so we bonded before and after the lab just
talking. He even walked me home since we apparently live across the street from
each other, and we’re also in the same Nutrient Gene Interactions class! Mom
ended up ‘stalking’ him when I mentioned him, Karin and Tim also came over that
night and we kind of just hung out, which was awesome.
Wednesday was super busy even though I only had one class.
It was my Nutrient class, so I just watched more about transcription factors,
which was still boring and review. However, after that I worked for three hours
to prepare for my lab for Animal Molecular Biology. I also wrote some exam
questions for the anatomy students, dealt with my printer not working, and
starting to work on TA work for next week. Then there was the friend dinner that
night, which meant I was cooking and then playing games for the entire evening.
I was so exhausted by the end of the day that I more or less just passed out.
Thursday was alright, all things considered. I had a nice
chill morning, I spent most of it reading and writing since I knew the latter
half of the day would be busy. Animal Molecular Biology lab was alright, though
I needed to ask a lot of questions and there was a bit of a mix up between who
my lab partner was. I was shuffled around a lot, but I got a really good yield of
RNA and my lab partners were impressed by my lab notebook instructions, so I’m
very proud of myself. After that, I had a decent amount of time before class,
which I used to chill on campus and print off the pre-lab quiz for next week’s
anatomy lab. Nick, the UA for this lab, was one I had already met, and so lab
was really chill and not a big problem, though watching the same movie in lab
for the third time felt like I was rotting my brain, which sucked. Afterwards,
though, I was able to just come home and chill again. So yeah, Thursday was
pretty alright.
Friday was fairly draining, but also really satisfying. I
had therapy early in the morning, and we more or less just talked about how the
holidays and Karin and Tim’s wedding went. We talked a little bit about harder subjects,
but overall, it was a nice, chill conversation with the therapist. I was able
to immediately work on my Nutrient class pretty soon afterwards, so I had time
to collect myself before being around Maren and Emily. I once again, just hung around
until it was time for me to go up to campus for my lab time. Lab was awesome.
We’re no longer using mounts for the brain tissue because mine is fixed and not
frozen. Instead we’re using wells to store them, and it’s really cool. I went through
an entire brain in my time, and the tissue was actually decently well cut too! Sara
was super impressed and I felt really proud. I knew when I came home that Anna
and Hannah would be there for the weekend, so I was prepared for people to be
home. We even went and got Maymoe’s, which was delicious, and we had a movie
night for the rest of the night.
And that was my week. I still need to get my laundry done
today, and I know we’re going shopping at some point today, but other than that,
I don’t know what this weekend is going to hold since we have two extra
housemates for the weekend. But yeah, busy week. Lots of new things that
happened this week. Hopefully next week isn’t as crazy, but knowing my schedule
it won’t be. Oh well. Here’s to hoping. Talk to you all next week!
