I don't have much of an excuse for not writing yesterday, except that nothing happened so you guys didn't miss much. Except the fire alarm went off at 11 o'clock last night. That was not fun. Anyways, nothing really happened today either... I had curry for lunch, which was okay, I guess, and then I had institute... be ready for my rant here:
Oh my gosh, institute today was great! I felt like I was back at Compass. So by this point, you probably know that my high school history teacher and my institute instructor have the same last name, right? Well, today I felt like I was in Mr. Jacob’s classroom back at Compass because we were talking a bit about the war chapters today. So normally, I don’t get much out of the war chapters, because I just think of it as death, death, and wait for it, more death. But today our instructor realized something halfway through the lesson and taught us about the whole reason why they were fighting to begin with, by pointing out a parallel between 1 Nephi 1, and Moroni 1 (I think it was Moroni one at least) where he pointed out that it was only after people were told they needed a saviour that they got upset and ready to hurt those who were talking. So we then went on a tangent about the differences in society from today and what Jacob (the institute Jacobs) had as a kid.
He then went full on Compass Mr. Jacob on us and talked about relative vs absolute truths, how morality has shifted over the years, the Northwest Ordinance (he actually asked if anyone had read about it and only the two history majors in the class and I raised our hands. I felt rather happy about that in that moment. I hope that isn’t prideful.), and even the Founding Fathers putting everything on the line and why religion was so important in the founding of America. While sometimes I struggled with Compass Mr. Jacob’s lessons, I actually really enjoyed Institute Brother Jacob’s a lot. It was like everything I had been internalizing over the years was starting to click like it always did in Mr. Jacob’s class. It’s been awhile since I was able to absorb more of the political-philosophy-tied-with-religion in a place where I felt safe (because Compass was normally a safe space for that, even if I was still reluctant to share my own opinions). I really appreciated it, even though Brother Jacob was trying really hard to stay politically neutral. Well, I just really wanted to talk about that, because the lesson today has been my favorite so far, and it was a super serious one.
And that was about the whole day in general. I had Ecology and Stats which sucked. So no talking about that. We also had the RS meeting, which went like normal. But yeah. That was about it.
Talk to you all later.
